Sigma SD9 D-SLR: Foveon X3 sensor
Sigma Posted by on 2002-02-23 16:14:59.835878+11
from the Sigma / dpreview.com dept.
Pre-PMA 2002: Sigma's new SD9 D-SLR will be the first digital camera to utilize Foveon's recently announced X3 sensor technology. This new camera has a 3.43 megapixel (effective) X3 sensor which outputs 2268 x 1512 x 3 pixels. Each pixel is 9 microns which makes the sensor 20.7 x 13.8 mm (a 1.7x focal length multiplier). The SD9 has a Sigma lens mount and a unique dust protector just behind the lens mount to stop dust from attaching itself to the sensor. Price is expected to be around US$3,000. Full Story here.

$3000? DoH!

At $3000, one might rather buy into a REAL system like Nikon or Canon, now that the D100 and Canon D60 are announced. Their older D30 should be a lot cheaper if you find one. With Sigma, you're stuck with their lens mount, and their lenses. If they really want to compete, the SD-9 should be priced at half that amount. Having used the SA-7, I am not really impressed by their AF speed - even my EOS-500 is faster.
Picture Quality may find Customers for this humble camera

It will be interesting to see just how good the Images are, 3 Meg may sound less than 6 Meg but with Foveons X3 it may be effectively more accurate given that you need to dived 6 meg by 4 for colour response and by at least 2 for resolution due to the nature of the mosaic sensor in CMOS and CCD cameras. Sigma or not, some may just buy this camera for its picture quality if Foveons claims are true. It may give a response like a 9 to 12 Meg CCD!

Have you seen the sample pics on the Foveon Website? I'd buy the camera! It is the most amazing forward step in digital technology, ever. Read about how Foveon (Dr. Meade?) sprung from the analog world trying to model the "pixel" after the human eye. Guess what...if the pics are any indication...they've succeeded!
When do the big boys come in.

If this chip is as good as everyone says then the argument is not about the quality of the Sigma unit, but how long until Nikon, Sony, and everyone else realize that they can't compete without this sensor. Why buy the D100 when it's technology is already inferior? Bill Gates sure has jumped on with XP compatibility in the works. Whether you like Bill or not (I sure don't) you must admit that if it is big enough for him to jump on board there must be something to it.
No news bad news?

Does anyone have "fresh" news about this technology? I can't find anything new about it since february...

Is the company always alive?
