from the New Stuff dept.
In an article in the March 2002 issue of US
magazine Popular Photography, there are several
mentions about a new Nikon lens: 28-200 F2.8 VR.
Very little is said about the lens except for its
ample size. Unless, Mr. Keppler was smoking wacky
tobaccy this is a true milestone with great
range, great speed (F2.8) and VR (Vibration
control. Any comments?

Nikon 28-200 F2.8 VR

| To my best knowledge, a 70-200/2.8 VR (and not an
28-200 version) is rumored to be introduced in
upcoming PMA.
Please note that it's only VR and no SW/AF-S. It
seems that Nikon has some trouble combining the
two technologies.
Nevertheless it's rumors and we'll have to wait
and see the actual lens. Cheers ,
Yakim.

Everything that's been mentioned about this lens
has also been told off so far. The images of the
lens apparantly do not imply that it could be such
a lens, as the design doesn't indicate it. There
was a thread a while ago on photo.net covering the
same thing.
The most common opinion was that it is actually
some form of 70-200 2.8 VR lens. However nobody
really knows. And I wonder why Nikon would make
such a change to their optical formula in order to
obtain the 70-200, they could simply base it on
their 80-200 D lens and be done with.
Unfortunately, there is really no way to tell.
Another important aspect which was discussed was
the lack of AF-S, and if Nikon produces a lens of
this caliber without AF-S, then it raises
question to the capability of their mount. Can it
handle having both systems in the same lens? It
is commonly said that both AF-S and VR use the
same electrical contacts to function, so logically
there would be some sort of conflict. |

| I think they have to totally re-do the optical
formula to introduce VR anyway, so it's not
surprising they might upgrade to 70-200. Re the mount, you wouldn't think there would be
a problem - when you press the button power is
supplied to AFS, you would think it could be
sent to VR as well, but who knows? |

| You probably don't even want to know what lens I
think it is. Haha. |
