Tablet PCs have really swept in to take a good chunk of the sales of gadgets this year because of their versatility and strengths. Although smartphones have become the all in one device — phone, digital camera, video camera, device for browsing the Web, music player, etc. — they are just too small to replace computers. That’s where the tablet PC can help.

The New Wave of Tablets

Unlike previous incarnations of tablets, this new group of tablet PCs is better than previous versions. Previous tablet PCs were bulky, for one. They typically were laptops that had a touch screen that could swivel around. To truly make these tablets portable, they needed, really, to be bigger versions of smartphones with large screens that were sensitive to the touch.

It was Apple’s iPad that really revolutionized the design, showing other manufacturers what table PCs should look like. Since then, many companies have produced amazing new tablets including the G-Slate, Samsung Galaxy Tab, and Dell Streak.

Designs for Tablet PCs

With the new wave of tablet PCs comes new designs. For portability, many companies are producing tablets with 7″ screens. Other companies are creating tablets that imitate the size of text books and even have double screens so two pages can be seen at the same time. There are many operating systems to choose from as well, including Apple’s iOS, Google’s Android, Microsoft’s Windows 7, and Research in Motion’s QNX (a variation of UNIX).

Web learning opens vast avenues of choices. One can take a course, get an online degree or discuss a subject with an expert. The way people learn and get information is radically different from the past. There are no more keepers of the secret knowledge or gatekeepers a person has to please. Somewhere, someplace, someone who has the knowledge has written in some form or shape, an essay or article on the subject in cyberspace.

To be educated now is to be an elearners. The learning process is different. One reads or scans information or info-graphics and then reflects on the knowledge. Learning has become less about memorizing and more about asking questions. How does this information work in the world? What fits with what you know presently, and how do you make a bridge to knowledge that does not fit in your framework?

A person digests information he or she researched, encounters an opposing opinion on the matter and mulls over the possibilities. Web use makes one a “prosumer,” which is a producing consumer. Information is intermingled, then refined and possibly displayed differently, much like a music remix.

Internet reading is not only about text. Graphics, video, interactive media such as Facebook and open-source platforms make mass collaboration possible. Text turns into charts, tables, pictures, video and so on. You are not alone in cyberworld, but are part of a variety of groups constantly interacting and synthesizing information. The elearning is about mixing old and new information, and adding it to our own framework of thought.

Doing more with computers is using various mediums and interacting in many ways with others.

Most people go to work and come home; they don’t worry about setting up an office or having a space to work without being disturbed. When you work for yourself or at home you don’t exactly have that option. Having a home office can be something that is almost necessary to separate home living to home working.

For those who haven’t ever set up a home office there are a few things to keep in mind.

  • What kind of space do you have for your home office? The office space needs to be something that is both separate and permanent. For those who do not have separate rooms combining a room to create an office are could mean separating the space with room dividers or curtains.
  • Office space also plays into office furniture. Typically an office holds what is necessary for work (i.e. computer, printer, files, ect..) Choosing furniture that fits the space is important because you don’t need to feel like you are in a small shoebox.
  • Quiet space is important for most office arrangements. Most people who work from home can testify that it is easy to get distracted when you are at home so having a quiet space can limit possible distractions.
  • Setting up a separate business phone line for working hours can create the business atmosphere. Having clients call a specific phone line during business hours while being unable to answer personal phone lines will assist any home office greatly. Not to mention this will also separate out the office from the home life once the business hours are over.

More and more people are starting to work from home rather than making the commute. The Internet has provided a lot of access to the world for those who like to sit at home from the comfort of the couch. Starting a home based business however might not necessarily be as easy as some may think. There are a lot of steps to consider before you decide to pursue the idea of working from home.

  • What is your market? Each business has a specific market, the prosperity of your product or service depends on those who will need or want it. If you have a unique product or service the more likely you are to receive business, the less unique you are the more competition you will have and ultimately the less money you will make.
  • Funding is important to a home-based business. The more money you invest the more likely you are to make money. This may mean that before you start a business you first must work at a regular business. Saving money for both the home based business and for personal expenses outside of business is recommended for those who will stop working or cut hours in order to start a business.
  • Marketing plans are essential for a business. Simply put if you do not advertise you will not have business. Putting together a good marketing plan can ensure your memorability in the market as well as attract new customers who will come back repeatedly and recommend you.

When you work from home or run an office having the right software is important. Depending on what kind of business you run will normally predict what type of software is necessary for you. Here are a few great ways to figure out exactly what you need as far as software is concerned.

  • To begin with create a list of things you want the software to do for you. Most office computers will typically have the Microsoft Office Business edition installed which will include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and a few other useful programs. Some companies will have software for time cards which would be similar to the punch in and out clocks seen in most other business establishments.
  • Once you have decided what you need your software to do it is time to research software. IT is a good idea to look online and get an idea of what is out there both for sale and for free. Sometimes it is just as simple to find a free version of the software, as it would be to purchase software. The best way to find the best software is to read reviews, most products will have some sort of review online and finding out what others have thought or experienced can give you a good look into what you are looking at.
  • The next step is to talk to a computer technician or analyst. This is important to do not only to make sure the software you have chosen is appropriate but also because it is important to make sure you have the right kind of computer to run the software before you attempt to install it (granted you most likely know that already.)
